From a previous Someone Somewhere Saying journal entry
By Teresa Davis
And testified someone somewhere saying, “What is man that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? You have made him for a short time lower than angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, you subjected everything under his feet.”
(Hebrews 2:6-8, paraphrased from The New Greek/English Interlinear New Testament, Robert K. Brown and Philip W. Comfort, Translators)
I often fall in love with a verse in Scripture not only for its life-giving content, but also for the exquisite beauty of the joined-together Greek or Hebrew words. Hebrews 2:6 is one such verse. I hear what comes before as a declaration, given just to me: Teresa, pay great attention to what you have heard about My kingdom, lest you drift away…” (My paraphrase of Hebrews 2:1)
Then, in v. 6, the Hebrew author quotes a portion of an Old Testament Psalm to help me better understand just how important it is that I do not drift away. Though the reference is quoted almost exactly, it isn’t named—perhaps the author wants to avoid a specific reference in order to point straightaway to the testimony (a form of the Greek word diamartyromai) of the chosen words. Just prior to the words from Psalm 8 comes this beautiful introductory phrase:
And testified someone… (The Greek word tis. In its singular or plural form, this indefinite pronoun means “some,” or “someone.”)
somewhere… (The Greek word pou, a particle signifying “somewhere.”)
saying… (A form of the Greek word lego, which means, “to say, speak, affirm,” whether of actual speech, or of unspoken thought, or of a message in writing.)
For many years I have been settling into my devotional time with my favorite Old and New Testament, my journal, a Zebra F-301 black fine-point ink pen in my hand, and this simple prayer on my heart: Show me, Lord. Show me. And without fail, simply because I ask it of Him, he lays out His amazing diamartyromai before me.
I read. I wait. I listen. I write.
I invite you to visit with me in this little corner of the Newville Church website, where I will share pieces of what I am hearing from Him about His kingdom. My goal is to have new postings in this place to coincide with the themes of the pastor’s Sunday morning messages. Be forewarned: You will likely hear Kingdom Good News heavily salted with all of who I am—a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a daughter, a sister, an aunt, a teacher, a counselor, and a friend. I invite you to share with me as well. Is He showing you something new and beautiful that you would like to share in regard to the chosen Scripture passages? How delightful that would be, for what we are together in Him is so much more than what we are alone.
Someone Somewhere Saying. Perhaps we will help each other pay far more attention to this great salvation, so that we do not drift away from it.
